Despite a strong second half, the Summit High girls’ soccer team lost 5-0 Thursday at Eagle Valley.

The Tigers fell behind 4-0 in the first 45 minutes, but came back after halftime with renewed vigor. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough.

“It was an improvement, but we got a little down on ourselves after the goals in the first half,” SHS assistant coach Emilie Theobold said. “We came out strong in the second half, though, and played really well.”

Theobold added that her team’s early struggles in the match were completely mental.

“We just needed to settle down and play our games,” she said.

Although the Tigers were shutout for the third straight game to start the season, some Summit attackers put heat on the Eagle Valley goaltender.

On two separate occasions in the first half, Summit sailed corner kicks toward the Eagle Valley goal. Both times, the ball rattled around in the box but was eventually booted away.

Forwards Nicole Chandler and Robyn Kresge also generated some scoring chances for Summit.

“Unfortunately, nothing ended up going in,” Theobold said.

Still, the match gives the Tigers (0-3) some reason for optimism heading into today’s match at Arvada.

“We just played much better as a team in the second half,” Theobold said.

Today’s match is slated to start at 4 p.m.
