Although the official results will show only five top-10 finishes for the Summit High track and field team Tuesday at a 4A Jeffco League meet, Tiger head coach Kristy McClain couldn’t have been much happier with her team’s performance.
“I am very impressed with this team,” she said. “Many of the returning athletes’ efforts are similar to their personal bests last year.”
And Tuesday was only the Tigers’ second meet of the season. Early on in the year, McClain said, the important thing to focus on is improving times.
D’Evelyn High School won the meet on the girls’ side, while Evergreen captured the title for boys.
Summit finished 10th for girls and 11th for boys.
The top Tiger finish of the meet went to junior Taylor Greene, who finished sixth in the girls’ discuss competition with a throw of 73 feet.
Fellow junior Hannah Price also had a nice day in the field events. Price cleared 4 feet, 4 inches to place eighth in the girls’ high jump.
The Summit girls also had two relay squads earn team points.
Taryn Spencer, Arielle Falcone, Crystal Nichols and Sophie Ferguson combined for an eighth-place showing in the 4×200 relay, and Spencer, Falcone, Ferguson and Olivia Lincenberg were eighth in the 4×400.
On the boys’ side, senior Nick Adolph earned Summit’s best finish after he came in eighth in the 800-meter run. Adolph’s time was 2:14.02.
The Tigers are back in action Wednesday, when they travel to another 4A league meet at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood at 3:30 p.m.
After Tuesday’s showing, McClain is ready for her team to get back at it.
“Our new athletes have been performing and practicing assiduously, and many of them have improved their times and distances substantially between only two meets,” she said. “I look forward to see(ing) what happens this season.”
