State crews aim to open Independence Pass by June 6

ASPEN ” State highway crews have been digging through the snow on Independence Pass for nearly a month and hope to have the route open by June 6th.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says all but the last two miles on the Aspen side of the pass is clear, but there is still 30 feet of snow in many areas. The pass is between Aspen and Leadville.

Crews will be working through the weekend and into next week to clear the highway. They had hoped to clear the pass this week but the deep snowpack from the harsh winter has slowed work.

Colorado 82 reaches 12,095 feet over Independence Pass, about 100 miles southwest of Denver.
