The town of Silverthorne won two 2004 Regional Starburst Awards for excellence in the use of Colorado Lottery proceeds for parks and recreation projects. Those dollars come from the sale of Powerball, Lotto, Cash 5 and Scratch tickets.

The regional winners received signs for their award-winning facilities, designating them as having won a Starburst Award. For projects costing up to $50,000, Silverthorne won for the Rainbow Park sand volleyball courts. With the completion of two new sand volleyball courts at its Rainbow Park, the town finished yet another phase of its park master plan.

The courts provide a venue for pick-up games, leagues and tournaments, and encourage the active lifestyle the community wants to promote. The town used a $15,000 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado to purchase the materials for the project.

For projects costing more than $1 million, Silverthorne won for the Silverthorne-Dillon Trail Connection. The new connection provides a safe, nonmotorized transportation link between the county’s paved recreation path in Dillon and Silverthorne.A state trails (Colorado Greenway) grant of Lottery money through Colorado State Parks was used for the design and planning of the trail. An additional $120,000 in Lottery proceeds came through a GOCO grant for the construction of the million-dollar project.
