Student drowns at hot springs pool

DURANGO – An autopsy was planned Monday for an 18-year-old Fort Lewis College student who drowned at Trimble Hot Springs.La Plata County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Dan Bender said Maxwell Silver of Colorado Springs and six friends apparently entered the pool at Trimble illegally early Saturday. A call to 911 at 3:32 a.m. said Silver was unconscious and not breathing.Bender said Silver and another man, who was not identified, were trying to swim the length of the pool underneath a tarp when they apparently became disoriented.Silver’s companion emerged coughing and semiconscious, but Silver did not emerge, Bender said. Friends retrieved Silver but could not revive him.Silver’s friend was expected to recover.Bender said alcohol was believed to be a factor in the accident. The investigation was continuing.
