Students suspected of smoking pot on bus

FRISCO – Sheriff’s deputies questioned three high school students suspected of smoking marijuana on a Summit School District bus Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities didn’t have enough information late Wednesday to say if charges would be filed.

The three teen-agers – two boys and a girl – were riding the bus on its regular route from Summit High School to Summit Middle School when the driver apparently noticed something awry. The driver made the three students get off the bus at the middle school, where they waited until the authorities came.

School superintendent Wes Smith said it appeared only two of the three students were involved in the alleged offense.

Because the students are minors, their names won’t be released, but if there’s truth to the accusations, Smith said they will be punished.

“If there’s evidence that’s convincing, they’ll face both the charges by the sheriff’s department and the school disciplinary code,” he said. “If it’s a first drug or alcohol offense, it’s a suspension from school – three to five days depending on the nature of the charges – and probably a suspension from riding the school bus. If it’s a second offense, they face expulsion.”

Whether or not a student is expelled depends on many factors, including the length of time since the individual’s last offense. A student who is distributing drugs, however, is automatically expelled from school.

“We take these very seriously, and wherever we have drugs, we always involve the police,” Smith said.
