Something new is coming to the Breckenridge music scene this month. The Summit Concert Band will host Music at the Summit Adult Band Camp, where adult musicians from more than 16 states will be descending on Breckenridge from Wednesday, June 25, through Sunday, June 29.

The camp will hold rehearsals, sectionals and classes at the Village at Breckenridge throughout the week, and Music at the Summit will conclude on Sunday, June 29, at 2 p.m. with “Hands Across the Sea,” a concert at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge. The concert is free and open to the public.

The “Hands Across the Sea” concert will feature, as its name implies, music from both sides of the “pond.” The program includes something for everyone, with symphonic, popular and patriotic band music from the United States and the United Kingdom, including both the American and British national anthems. Highlights include Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite in F,” “Eagle Squadron March,” by Kenneth Alford, and “Gaelforce,” by Peter Graham. On the lighter side, the band will perform “The Symphonic Beatles,” George Gershwin’s “Embraceable You,” featuring vocalist Margaret Banton and “Soul Bossa Nova,” by Quincy Jones (arranged especially for Music at the Summit). The concert will finish with a rousing rendition of John Philip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”

Band camp for adults

Music at the Summit Adult Band Camp is the brainchild of Summit Concert Band director, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Beth Steele. She developed the concept and put it into action, with help from Summit Concert Band members and musicians from around the world. Steele will be acting as the camp director and will aid with conducting.

“I saw an opportunity to give adult musicians a chance to improve their skills while getting to enjoy Colorado and the mountains,” Steele said, “and what better place than Breckenridge?”

Participants in the camp will take part in rehearsals under the direction of Dr. Graham O. Jones, MBE. Jones recently retired from the British Army after a glittering career spanning nearly 40 years. He retired as the senior director of music, Household Division, and director of music, Coldstream Guards, a position unequaled throughout military music in Great Britain. Jones will be conducting the band for rehearsals and at the “Hands Across the Sea” concert on Sunday afternoon.

Behind the scenes

Jones will also be presenting a Conductor’s Chat, “Behind the Scenes at Buckingham Palace,” on Thursday, June 26, at 8 p.m. in the Ten Mile Room at the Village at Breckenridge. He will provide a rare glimpse of life behind the scenes at Buckingham Palace as seen by Her Majesty’s former director of music.

Entertaining stories, ceremonial “near misses” and anecdotes will give the audience an extraordinary look at the life of the Royal Family behind the gates of Buckingham Palace. From the daily Changing of the Guard to Trooping the Colour to Britain’s solemn Festival of Remembrance, Jones was responsible for all the musical support for the entire nation, including Buckingham Palace. Questions from the audience are welcome.

BAND CAMP STAFF

The internationally acclaimed staff for the Adult Band Camp includes Dr. Richard Morgan, low brass-tuba; Scott Vincent, percussion; Alaunde Copley-Woods, flute-woodwinds; Carol Doemel, high brass-trumpet, Dr. Linda Shea, woodwinds-clarinet; and Sue Neff, double reeds-oboe. These clinicians will be conducting sectionals for the different instruments in the band, as well as master classes that will help musicians improve their skills on their various instruments.
