The Summit High School baseball team does not get the luxury of playing very many games at home.

With no baseball diamond at the high school, the team must work with local towns in order to get the nearby fields in the right condition for play. After hosting zero home games last season, the Summit baseball team is scheduled to play eight this spring.

While this season has been unseasonably warm and dry, the Tigers have also been affected by the installation of a turf field at Breckenridge’s Kingdom Park. Featuring both a turf infield and outfield, snow can readily melt from the field, allowing the team to host more games in Summit County.

The Tigers were able to host its first home game of the season on Wednesday, April 9, when the team took on Northfield High School. In the middle of a six-game winning streak, Summit looked to secure a seventh-straight win, but the team was thwarted by an extremely competitive Northfield baseball team.

The Northfield Nighthawks began the game by getting one runner across the plate before Summit took a 2-1 lead by the end of the second inning. After a scoreless third inning, Northfield strung together four impressive innings to close out the game.

Producing six runs in the seventh inning, Northfield defeated Summit, 12-2.

The Tigers then traveled to Canon City on Saturday, April 12, for a double header. Summit won the first game, 7-6, before dropping the second, 13-3.

Wanting to jump back into the win column, Summit hosted Salida High School at home on Tuesday, April 15. Junior Sam Eldredge went on a tear for the team, going 4-4 from the plate and bringing in four runners.

Senior Austin Koll pitched 4.1 innings for the team, allowing zero runs and recording five strikeouts. Summit advanced to 8-3 overall on the season with a 8-0 win.

With fair spring weather, Summit then hosted Battle Mountain High School on Wednesday, April 16, for a double header. In the first game, Summit challenged the Battle Mountain Huskies but fell 4-3.

Wanting to split the double header with 4A Western Slope league team, Summit returned to the diamond in the early evening hours on Wednesday.

Following a scoreless top of the first inning for Summit, Battle Mountain got on the scoreboard. With a runner on third, Battle Mountain’s William Townsend brought the run across home plate with a hit to mid-right field.

Wanting to match Battle Mountain, Summit put several runners on base before freshman Jagger Roberts brought in senior Gus Bradford.

The Roberts hit seemed to really wake up Summit as in the very next at bat, junior Matty Misch sent a great hit to center field. The hit was deep enough to bring in Roberts, giving Summit a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the second, the Tigers quickly retired the inning with senior Lucas Comcowich striking out the second batter he faced.

Summit continued to find success from the batter’s box. After junior Hogan Tobias got hit with a pitch, junior Jojo Gambino sliced a line drive to left field, putting two runners on base.

Soon after, Bradford hit a single on a fly ball to center which allowed Tobias to score and Gambino to advance to third. With only one out in the inning, Gambino then took advantage of a wild pitch in order to score the Tigers’ fourth run of the game.

Eventually, Battle Mountain was able to close out the inning and advance the game into the bottom of the third.

The Huskies struggled in their half of the inning, seeing three straight outs off of three at bats.

In large part because of good base running, Summit doubled its score in the top of the fourth. Eldredge, Tobias and Comcowich recorded runs batted in (RBIs) while Gambino scored on another wild pitch.

Feeling the game slipping out of reach, Battle Mountain tried to wake up its bats. The Huskies were able to put two runners on base off of a hit and a walk, but it did not result in a run.

The Tigers continued to expand upon its 8-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Summit scored one run in the inning when Misch hit a ground ball, bringing Koll across home plate.

With Comcowich still manning the mound, Summit retired the bottom of the fifth inning in four at bats. Eldredge and Gambino each recorded outs before Summit caught Battle Mountain’s Kai Tipton in a pickle between first and second base.

Showing patience, the Tigers’ infield threw the ball back and forth from first to second before eventually tagging out Tipton while he was trying to slide.

The stellar defense soon resulted in great offense. In the first at bat of the inning, Gambino fired a ground ball to left field, allowing him to record a double. Soon after, Comcowich brought Gambino home on a single to center field.

That was just the beginning of a huge inning for the Tigers. Summit closed out the inning by scoring three additional runs. Sophomore JP Vietti and Koll were credited with the first two RBIs while Misch hit a ball deep to center field for the final RBI of the inning.

Battle Mountain tried to cut into Summit’s 13-1 lead, but could not find a way to overcome the infield of Summit. Summit won 13-1 in the second game of the double header.

“It meant a lot to us especially after that loss,” Gambino said. “We were able to come back as a team. It means a lot of us going into Rifle because those are two games where we need to win. The momentum is looking good for us right now.”

With a record of 9-4, Summit will now travel to Rifle High School in a double header on Saturday, April 19.

“We are probably just going to hit together,” Gambino said. “We have to stay up together, have to keep the chemistry up. Got to keep working together. Today was a good team win. Everyone came together as one. We are going to have to keep the same going into Rifle.”

Following the Rifle double header, Summit will enjoy spring break before hosting Glenwood Springs on April 30 and Eagle Valley for a home double header on May 3.
