Playing in Breckenridge at above 9,000 feet, the Summit High School boys lacrosse team does not get very many warm, spring games.

In fact, Summit has played its home games so far this season in the snow and wind, with players often sporting hoodies under their pads. After braving the conditions, Summit was awarded with beautiful blue skies and temperatures in the 60’s as it hosted Eagle Valley High School on Saturday, April 12.

Serving as Summit’s third home game of the season, the Tigers took to the field and tried to quickly net a goal against the Eagle Valley Devils.

The Tigers achieved their goal of shocking the Devils’ defense early, putting two shots into the back of the net within the first couple minutes of the first quarter. Eagle Valley tried to get its offense going before the end of the first frame, but the Summit defense produced turnovers and blocked shots while sophomore goalie Ever Smith made saves.

After one quarter of play, Summit led 2-0.

Wanting to expand upon its lead, Summit charged down the field and set up its offense. After passing the ball around the net, senior Graham Schuman made a great cut, received a pass and buried his shot in the back of the net.

With momentum beginning to build for the Tigers, the team continued to prowl in front of the goal. Soon after the Schuman goal, senior Ryder Nazzarine used his wheels to sprint past Eagle Valley defenders and score a fourth Summit goal.

The Devils tried to find a way to stop the Tigers’ scoring, but struggled to possess the ball longer than a minute at the time. Summit senior Harbor Scheuermann, junior Will Hendrickson and senior John Russo put on a defensive clinic, checking players and securing loose balls.

The strong defense led to great offense on the other side of the field. Fighting through several defenders, Summit sophomore Dublin Nelson sent a fiery shot past the Eagle Valley goalie, giving the Tigers a 5-0 lead late in the second quarter.

Eagle Valley was able to put an end to Summit’s impressive scoring streak, finding the top left corner behind Smith’s head. The Eagle Valley goal gave the team some energy, resulting in a second Devils’ goal a few moments later.

Summit pushed its lead back to four goals in the waning moments of the second quarter. Nazzarine was credited with the goal, giving the team a 6-2 lead going into the second half.

On the precipice of a second win this season, senior Zander Reid scored a goal 12 seconds into the fresh frame. The snipe of a shot caught the Devils off guard, causing the team to grow more frustrated with their performance.

Summit tried to dig into Eagle Valley being thrown off its game. After taking a few more looks at the net, Eagle Valley sprinted down the field and scored its third goal of the game.

With senior Matty Tater in goal for Summit in the second half, Eagle Valley went on a scoring spree. At the midway point of the third quarter, Eagle Valley brought the score within a point by scoring its fourth unanswered goal.

It was not long before Eagle Valley was able to scrounge for the game-tying goal. This time, the Devils’ offense cut through the Tigers’ defense and put a shot past Tater from a few yards in front of the net.

Needing to find a footing, sophomore Bodie Hennek took matters into his own hands. Juking his way closer to the net, Hennek regained a one-goal, 8-7, lead for the team. Nelson scored Summit’s second unanswered goal before Reid brought the score to 10-7 heading into the final quarter.

Leading by three goals, Summit tightened up on defense. Warmed up between the pipes, Tater made several impressive saves to maintain Summit’s three-goal lead.

As Eagle Valley grew more aggressive, Summit rose to the occasion, glancing off punishing hits and not letting the opposition get under its skin. The even-keeled approach resulted in freshman Owen Wagner putting a shot in the net.

A few seconds later, Antonin Michas Deniau fired off a shot before being clobbered by an Eagle Valley defender. Despite a defender breathing down his neck, Michas Deniau was able to score the goal, giving way to a 12-7 Summit lead.

Summit continued to clamp down late in the final frame. Nelson put another shot in the goal before sophomore Kiernan Clark scored one of his own.

Only allowing a goal in the final quarter, Summit defeated Eagle Valley, 14-8.

“Ever since our first win against Glenwood, we have had a lot of energy and have been trying to push forward,” Reid said. “Last few years we have been JV, so it means the world to win twice. Our coaches are trying to get us to stop cussing, so I think having pushups as a penalty helps keep us in check.”

Summit is now 2-4 overall on the season and 2-3 in league play. Next up, Summit will lay three games on the road before returning to Breckenridge. The Tigers will face Aspen on Thursday, April 17, before taking on Crested Butte on April 29 and Thomas Jefferson on April 30.

“We are ready to play and coming off a win it feels good,” Reid said. “We have a lot of energy.”

Summit’s next home game will be on May 2 against Durango.
