Summit County Assessor’s Office reminds residents of tax discount programs for seniors, veterans and active military members

The Summit County Assessor’s Office is reminding local residents of upcoming deadlines for personal property declarations and property tax discount and deferral programs for seniors, veterans and active military members.

Personal property declarations, which the Assessor’s Office has mailed out to about 2,300 business owners, including furnished residential units, must be returned by April 15, according to a news release.

Other important deadlines for personal property declarations include June 16, when the assessor notifies business owners of their personal property valuation, and June 30, the deadline to file a protest of that personal property valuation, the release states.

When the state’s budget allows, Colorado offers property tax reductions for homeowners 65 and over who have lived in their homes as a primary residence for 10 years or more, the release states. Military veterans considered unemployable due to their disabilities and surviving spouses of U.S. military members killed in the line of duty qualify for a tax break up to 50% off the first $200,000 in actual value of their residence, according to the news release.

Colorado’s Property Tax Deferral Program can also help seniors and active military personnel continue to afford to live in their homes by deferring the payment of property taxes, according to the Assessor’s Office.

The State Treasurer is in charge of all aspects of this program, including the deferral application process, the release states. To find more information on the program, visit Treasury.Colorado.gov/property-tax-deferral-programs.
