SUMMIT COUNTY – Veterans Day – a holiday held Nov. 11 to honor American veterans for their patriotism, service and sacrifice throughout history – can be celebrated in Summit County by donating items to the Rotary’s troop care package project.

Rotarians Al and Liz Wickert head up the ongoing effort to send packages oversees to soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Rotary Club of Summit County has been doing this now for about seven years.

The group sends packages four times a year to troops with connections to Summit County, Liz said. The connection could be parents, relatives and siblings. Right now, the Wickerts have eight soldiers on their list.

“At Christmas time, there’s a special push to obtain donations from the community,” Liz said. “It’s partially funded by the Rotary Club with fundraising efforts, and partially by community.”

According to the Wickerts, donations collected during November will go toward creating Christmas boxes. The care packages will be put together Dec. 2.

“We send them each five boxes of goodies,” she said. “They tend to share them with other people.”

Donation bins are located at Summit County City Markets, Safeway and Wal-Mart. For lists of desired items, people should go to the customer service desks at each store. The Wickerts also accept monetary donations for the care package project.

“The guys like to see the newspapers, so we line the boxes with the Summit Daily News,” Liz said. “They like puzzles, cartoons, finding out what’s happening in Summit County.”

For more information about the care packages, e-mail summitrotary@aol.com or call the Wickerts at (970) 453-4778.

“Anybody can come and help,” Liz said.

Tax-deductible donations can be sent to: Rotary Club of Summit County Charitable Fund (denote Troop Support on check) P.O. Box 4401, Frisco, CO 80443.
