Summit County clinics offer screening promos for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

More than 98 percent of people with breast cancer defeat the disease if the cancer is detected early. That five-year survival rate drops to 24 percent, though, for those whose cancer is found in later stages.

For that reason, the National Cancer Institute and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend women in their 40s and older have a mammogram every one or two years.

Not everyone knows about the life-saving screenings or can afford them, however, so Summit County clinics are offering free exams and other incentives to encourage women to get mammograms this October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

SUMMIT COMMUNITY CARE CLINIC

The Summit Community Care Clinic, in partnership with the Women’s Wellness Connection and Susan G. Komen Denver, is offering free clinical breast exams and mammograms to women who are uninsured or underinsured, 50 years of age and older and meet specific income guidelines.

Women age 40 to 49 with personal or first-degree family history of breast cancer or who have symptoms of breast cancer may also qualify for free services. The program also provides free Pap tests and pelvic exams for women 40 and older.

For more information or to find out if you qualify for the free exams, contact Jennifer González at 970-668-4057 or Mayra Rojas at 970-668-6696, or toll-free at 1-866-951-9355.

ST. ANTHONY Summit MEDICAL CENTER

St. Anthony Summit Medical Center is a member of the Mountain Komen Coalition, which meets quarterly to collaborate with five surrounding counties regarding breast health services and to share and network resources for breast cancer patients.

For the month of October, the center will open its doors on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. for mammos, muffins and mimosas. (The nonalcoholic mimosas will be made with sparkling cider).

To make an appointment, call the center’s mammography department at (970) 668-2810.

SHAW BREAST CENTER AND CANCER CLINIC

The Shaw Breast Center and Cancer Clinic currently offers mammogram services in Frisco on Thursdays, from 8 a.m. to 4:30, and is offering a mammogram and massage promotion.

Anyone who books a mammogram in the month of October will receive a free 15-minute chair massage at the center at 323 W. Main St.

To schedule an appointment, call the center at (970) 668-6400.
