SUMMIT COUNTY – Sherri Gareau likes working with kids, so it’s no wonder she was hired as Summit County’s new Americorps Promise Fellow.

As the county’s promise fellow for the next year, Gareau also is responsible for directing Make a Difference Day – a county-wide volunteer day in October, and for educating community members about the 40 assets that increase a child’s potential for success.

She also will work will kids in school and summer and day camps.

“Right now, I’m working in the school district,” Gareau said, adding that this summer, she will coordinate the visual and performing arts program for the local summer camps.

Gareau, who graduated with a degree in recreation, leisure studies and outdoor eduction from State University of New York College at Cortland, plans to use her Americorps experience to pursue a career in teaching.

She is succeeding Americorps Promise Fellow Ben Bornstein, who died in a snowmaking accident at Keystone Resort in November.

Bornstein took over for Promise Fellow Tara Eaton, who is now working for the Summit Prevention Alliance as a coordinator for the Assets for Youth program. Eaton spearheaded a literacy-for-preschoolers program.
