Summit County: Heavy snow, heavy winds expected

Weather forecasters say the storm headed toward the central Rocky Mountains from the Northwest, slated to hit tonight through Tuesday, is a definite. What they don’t know is exactly how much snow will fall, but they’re predicting a foot or two at higher elevations and up to 10 inches on the valley floors in Summit County.

A winter storm warning is in effect and expires at 5 a.m. Tuesday, National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Kalina said. He said Summit County’s mountains are expected to receive 3-6 inches tonight and 5-10 inches Monday, with possible additional snowfall Monday night.

“There will be a lot of blowing and blowing snow especially above tree line,” Kalina said, explaining that winds on Monday are expected to be a sustained 30-45 miles per hour with gusts up to 70-80 mph. Winds should decrease by Monday night.

Highs in the mountains are expected to be around 30 degrees.

It’s expected to be a heavy travel weekend, snow or not, and the National Weather Service recognizes it in their warning, “this will make travel very hazardous or impossible.”

“It’s one of the busiest weekends of the year,” said Copper Mountain spokesman David Roth to The Denver Post. “We’re expecting heavy traffic.”

The storm isn’t expected to hit the Denver metro area very hard – highs are expected to be in the mid-50s and lows in the upper 20s on the Monday holiday. However, some snow may fall on Monday night.
