Summit County: Highlands-area prescribed burns scheduled for today

DAILY NEWS STAFF REPORT

Breckenridge’s Red, White and Blue Fire District officials plan to burn nine piles of beetle-killed timber removed from the Upper Blue Valley.

The fire district and the Town of Breckenridge created the piles to reduce fire fuel loads earlier this season. It’s part of a four-year effort to mitigate parts of Breckenridge’s open space properties in the Highlands to create fuel breaks and reduce fuel loading.

As much wood was recycled as possible, a release from the Red, White and Blue Fire District stated. No material was brought to the landfill. The goal when burning is to create as much heat as possible within the pile to reduce particulates in the air.

For more information about the burns, tune into SCAlert and local radio notification or contact battalion chief Kim Scott at (970) 453-2474.
