After hosting four races throughout the summer, the Summit Mountain Challenge mountain bike race series is swiftly coming to a close.
On Wednesday, Aug. 6, Race Breck hosted the penultimate race in the series — the Peaks Trail Time Trial.
Beginning at the Peaks Trailhead in Breckenridge, riders take off individually and attempt to complete the 7.6-mile, mostly downhill route to the Miner’s Creek Trailhead in Frisco as quickly as possible.
The junior boys 13-15-year-old division were the first group of athletes to pedal away from the Peaks Trailhead on a fairly cloudy Wednesday afternoon. Seven athletes competed in the age group, with Leadville’s Wilson Anderson recording the fastest time across the rollicking course.
Anderson took first place with a time of 33 minutes, 8 seconds, Jonny Moss of Nederland finished in second (34:25) and Team Summit’s Ryan Levi of Silverthorne rounded out the podium in third (35:18).
The junior girls 13-15-year-old division was handily won by Breckenridge’s Lucy Greenwood. Leaning on her mountain biking expertise as well as her deep background in endurance sports, Greenwood cruised across the Peaks Trail, finishing the time trial in a time of 36:22.
Sophie Dinse of Breckenridge followed in second in 38:05, with Summit County’s Tessa Jacobs taking third overall in 39:04.

The pro/open men were the next group of athletes to power themselves away from the start line. Breckenridge’s Taylor Shelden notched the top time among the group of participants, recording a time of 28:03. Edwards’ Reiner Schmidt took second with a time of 29:39, while Vail’s Freedom Bennett took third in 30:07.
A group of Summit County teenagers topped the expert men 16-to-39 division. At 16-years-old, Trent Granshaw of Breckenridge recorded a time of 31:33 to win the time trial by over a minute. Parker Osborn, 17, followed Granshaw in second with a time of 32:52, while Owen Harris, 16, of Leadville took third overall (33:01).
Joseph Glass of Manitou Springs won the expert men 40-to-49 age division. Glass finished the race in a time of 29:11, while Breckenridge’s Kevin Dixon took second (31:09) and Kremmling’s Scott Boettcher finished in third (32:00).
The women’s pro/open race featured just four riders, with two of them being related to one another. Evergreen’s Sarah Lally, 15, of Donovan Racing won the division with a time of 37:09. Sydney Lally, 17, of Silverthorne took second in 38:46.
Arvada’s Jess Daniels took third (38:56), with Aila Harmala of Summit County finishing just off the podium in fourth (39:31).

Breckenridge’s Maria Leech was crowned the champion of the expert and singlespeed women 16-plus division. The 28-year-old rider clocked a time of 35:28, which was 32 seconds faster than Breckenridge’s Justina Liss in second place (36:00). Katie Middleton of Breckenridge took third in the division in a time of 36:54.
Charlotte Karls, 59, of Salida won the beginner women 16-plus race in a time of 54:10, while Cindy Dallow, 64, of Silverthorne took second in 1:23:37.
A trio of Summit County cyclists spearheaded the sport women 16-plus division results. June Baniewicz, 17, of Frisco recorded a time of 41:30 to top the division, and was soon followed by Courtney Shelden in second (43:42). Michelle Tennant of Breckenridge finished in third in a time of 45:31.
While the majority of the athletes completed the time-trial route from Breckenridge to Frisco, cyclists under the age of 12 completed a 3.7-mile course around the Miner’s Creek Trailhead.
Ezra Stamp recorded the win in the junior boys 8-and-under race in a time of 27:30. Stamp was followed by Zamora, Mexico’s Diego Jimenez in second (28:43) and Team Summit’s Mason Ebert of Dillon in third (38:27).

Team Summit’s Iris Ryan of Breckenridge was awarded the race title in the junior girls 9- to 10-year-old division, riding across the finish line in a time of 28:27. Breckenridge’s Fiammetta Niemkiewicz took second in 29:53, while Laurel Sullivan finished in third (29:58).
Cameron Krause of Fort Collins won the junior boys 9- to 10-year-old division with a time of 21:18. Zebulon Stamp finished in second (23:46) and Brodie Cirks followed in third (26:45).
With no girls competing in the 8-and-under or 11- to 12-year-old division, the junior 11- to-12-year-old boys were the final group of cyclists to complete the kids’ race course. Featuring seven athletes, Team Summit’s Gabe Loomis of Breckenridge took first in 19:13.
Silverthorne’s Oliver Gervais, also of Team Summit, finished in second (20:18), and Leo Gilbert took third (22:22).
The Summit Mountain Challenge series will conclude with the Breckenridge Classic mountain bike race on Saturday, Aug. 23. To register for the race, visit RaceBreck.com.
