Summit County: School board to decide on SHS schedule today

Summit High School principal Drew Adkins and vice principal Gretchen Nies plan to recommend two schedule options at today’s Summit School District Board of Education meeting at the Central Administration Office.

The meeting convenes at 3 p.m. for an hour-long work session with the district’s attorney and its administrative team. At 4, the regular business portion begins.

Adkins’ and Nies’ recommendation is based on input and priorities identified by board members during their last meeting. They are presenting the seven-period modified block schedule with minor changes as well as a new schedule that has three days where all seven classes meet and two days of a block formation. The latter addresses board members’ suggestion of increasing student-teacher contact frequency.

A decision on the schedule is expected today.

Also at the meeting, board members plan to:

• Meet in executive session with superintendent search firm representatives to review the initial round of applications for the position, which starts this summer. Application review is confidential at this point in the search according to the Colorado Sunshine Law (C.R.S. 24-6-402),

• Hear about the Department of Education’s modifications to the on-time graduation rate calculations,

• Consider revised policies for the district’s drug-free workplace and student drug and alcohol use policies, responding to new marijuana legislation, and

• Provide an update on an expulsion hearing held in recent weeks, regarding whether an expulsion happened and for what reasons.
