The Summit County Sheriff’s Office last week assisted a lost skier out of the backcountry using a drone, responded to a dog bite that occurred on a backcountry trail and arrested a man who pointed a gun at another person.
The following incident occurred between Monday, Jan. 13, and Sunday, Jan. 19, according to the weekly log of notable calls published by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
On Monday, Jan. 13, a Summit County resident reported that someone opened a credit card in her name and attempted to buy cryptocurrency in Ohio. The resident recognized the scam and placed a fraud alert on the card. No money was lost.
Also Monday, deputies responded after a woman reported that her boyfriend had thrown her to the ground during an argument, injuring her. Deputies established probable cause, and the man was arrested for assault and domestic violence. Deputies transported him to the Summit County Jail.
On Tuesday, Jan. 14, deputies responded to an anonymous tip reporting a man threatening to kill a woman inside a residence. Upon arrival, a woman invited deputies into the unit. Due to the nature of the call, deputies conducted a protective sweep of the unit to ensure the scene was safe. During the sweep, they found a man hiding inside a bathroom. The investigation revealed that the man got into a fight at work but did not wish to report it or pursue it criminally. Deputies found no evidence of a disturbance at the residence, and multiple witnesses confirmed there was no domestic violence incident. The anonymous report was determined to be unfounded.
Also Tuesday, deputies responded to a report of a verbal altercation between a man and a woman in unincorporated Breckenridge. The investigation revealed that the man had seen text messages on the woman’s phone and accused her of cheating. Both parties shared similar stories and denied that there was a physical altercation, threats or property damage. The man agreed to leave for the night to prevent the situation from escalating. No crime was found.
In another incident Tuesday, Summit County Animal Control officers responded to the Montezuma area to investigate an anonymous report of a large number of animals living on a property. Upon arrival, officers found over 50 chickens, two ducks, three turkeys and nine dogs. All the animals appeared to be well cared for and had adequate shelter, food and water.
On Thursday, Jan. 16, a man reported receiving a message from a scammer claiming to be Detective Brandon Vail, who urged him to call back as soon as possible regarding an urgent civil matter. The man informed a deputy that no money was exchanged and he did not return the call.
Also Thursday, a man reported that his friend was walking around Copper Mountain while intoxicated and slipped on the ice, injuring his head. Deputies found the man and stayed with him until EMS personnel arrived to transport him to St. Anthony Summit Hospital.
On Friday, Jan. 17, the Summit County Rescue Group and deputies responded to a lost backcountry skier in the Shrine Pass area. The skier was able to return to the trailhead on his own with route guidance from a Sheriff’s Office drone.
Also Friday, animal control officers investigated a dog bite that occurred on Bald Mountain near Breckenridge. The victim stated he was skiing when an unleashed dog approached him and bit him. The bite penetrated the skier’s pants, long johns, socks and skin. The dog owner and skier exchanged contact information before the skier left to seek medical assistance. Officers followed up with the dog owner, who confirmed the skier’s account and provided vaccination records. The dog owner received a summons and was given a list of training resources.
On Saturday, Jan. 18, deputies responded to Keystone after receiving a report of a man pulling a gun in a residential parking lot during a dispute. Video evidence was collected that showed the man repeatedly pointing a handgun at a second man. Detectives obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s residents, a loaded gun was found and seized as evidence, and the man was arrested and taken to the Summit County jail, where he was booked on charges of felony menacing and reckless endangerment.
On Sunday, Jan. 19, deputies responded to a snowboarder at the base of the Keystone Resort gondola after ski patrol reported that he was highly intoxicated, which deputies confirmed at the scene. Upon investigation, no probable cause was established for a skier safety violation because the snowboarder was never observed snowboarding. He was released to a sober friend.
Also Sunday, deputies responded to a report of an assault at the Frisco Transfer Center. The first man stated that a second man and his friends threatened to kill him and threw a backpack. The second man denied the threats and stated it was the first man who was doing the threatening. In the end probable cause was not established for any assault, but both men were issued a summons for disorderly conduct.
