Summit County Sheriff’s log details stolen beer, threats made in gridlocked New Year’s Eve traffic and first DUI of the new year
The Summit County Sheriff's Office also received a report of cows stuck in deep snow and a man who left a New Year's Eve event without his shoes
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office last week responded to a report of beer stolen from a porch, threats made during gridlock traffic in Keystone on New Year’s Eve and a drunk driver who crashed his vehicle on New Year’s Day.
The following incidents occurred between Monday, Dec. 30, and Sunday, Jan. 5, according to the weekly log of notable calls published by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
On Monday, Dec. 30, the manager of a homeowners association in Keystone reported that an unknown man stole beer from at least one deck in the community. Deputies spoke with the residents of the unit where the beer was taken from, who reported that their Ring doorbell camera recorded video of someone from the sidewalk shoveling crew taking beer from a box that was left on their porch. The residents said that they believed he had mistakenly thought it was left there for the workers that shoveled the snow that day. They didn’t want to press charges.
On Tuesday, Dec. 31, Summit County Animal Control received a report of two cows in chest-deep snow in the Acorn Creek area. Officers were able to call and locate the owner of the cows, but she was in Mexico. Her cow sitter was contacted and, along with some other local ranchers, they came up with a plan to guide the cows in the direction of their home and away from the deep snow. They were able to get the cows back home without any further assistance.
Also Tuesday, deputies were dispatched to a parking lot in Keystone Village over a dispute stemming from gridlock traffic. Deputies made contact with a man who said he had been waiting to get out of the lot for over an hour after the fireworks ended, when another vehicle attempted to cut him off. The man didn’t let the truck in front of him, which led to the driver yelling insults and threats against him, telling him he was lucky his children were with him, otherwise he’d shoot him. The man didn’t see any gun or weapons but found the interaction unsettling. When traffic began moving he lost sight of the truck. Deputies responded and were unable to locate the truck. The man wanted to press charges and an investigation is ongoing.
On Wednesday, Jan. 1, deputies responded in the early hours of the morning to a report of an intoxicated man who left a residence without his shoes despite the cold weather. No one at the residence knew the man personally so they didn’t know how to contact him to get him his shoes and check on him. But deputies found him walking down a nearby road trying to get home. He wasn’t doing anything criminal and was able to take care of himself. He was given a courtesy ride by deputies.
Also Wednesday, deputies responded early in the morning to a report of a single-vehicle accident in unincorporated Dillon. At the scene, deputies found a sedan stuck in the snow, facing the wrong direction and partially blocking the road. A man found lying in the backseat told deputies he was the driver and that he was unsure of how he got his vehicle stuck on the shoulder of the road. His eyes were bloodshot, he smelled of alcohol and he admitted to drinking six beers, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He refused to perform roadside maneuvers and deputies reportedly found three empty beer cans in the back seat as well as an open can in the driver’s side cup holder. The man was arrested for driving under the influence and an open container violation before being transported to the Summit County jail.
In another incident Wednesday, deputies responded to a report of a single vehicle that slid off the road in unincorporated Breckenridge and had been stuck for several hours. The driver of the vehicle was on scene and said he had been stuck for at least four hours. A routine search of the Colorado Crime Information Center revealed that the man had an outstanding warrant out for his arrest. Deputies arrested him and transported him to the Summit County jail without incident.

On Saturday, Jan. 4, deputies were dispatched to a residence in the Keystone area for an audible burglary alarm. On scene, they observed fresh footprints in the snow leading to the front door, but nobody answered from inside the house and the tracks didn’t go around the house anywhere else. Deputies were able to reach relatives of the homeowner who said the footprints were from someone that looks after the house and confirmed all was OK.
On Sunday, Jan. 5, emergency services in Keystone reported that a snowboarder had spit on a skier during an altercation at the mountain. Deputies contacted the skier, who said he had yelled for people stopped in the trail to keep moving and get out of the way of other skiers. He was then confronted by a snowboarder who thought that the man was yelling at him. The skier claimed the snowboarder spit on his chest, but the snowboarder said he was just spitting on the ground and not toward the skier. The argument was not physical and the skier did not want to press charges.
Also Sunday, a man called to report that his wife had heard unknown men speaking Spanish while home alone and thought they were inside the house. She had locked herself in a room while waiting for deputies to respond. On scene, it was determined she heard men who were hired to shovel the driveway and were outside near the front door but never inside the home.
