Summit County Sheriff’s Office and local kids participate in special summer camp

Daily News staff report

SUMMIT COUNTY – The Sheriff’s Office is supporting local at-risk students through a summer camp opportunity next month in Larimer County.

Deputies Rebecca Johnson and Wanda Wilkersn have served as counselors and helped to ensure participation at the Laramie River Valley Rendezvous in the Rawah Wilderness.

One of the students to participate is Javier Pineda Rosas, 16, brother of Bryan Pineda Rosas who died last September as a result of flu complications, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release.

“This summer, Javier will have a unique opportunity to heal and connect with other teenagers when he and several other local kids spend a week this July” at the camp, according to the press release.

Camp activities include whitewater rafting, horseback riding, bicycling and hiking. The program each year unites 40 at-risk youth aged 13 to 16 with local police officers, firefighters, the Colorado National Guard and other community volunteers, according to the press release.

It is supported through community donations, grants and local fundraisers. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office has established a fund to help with attendance costs for local kids. To donate, call deputy Johnson at (970) 418-0713 or visit http://www.lrvr.org. Contributions are tax deductible and funds must be received by June 30.
