Summit County Sheriff’s Office participates in operation shepherd

DAILY NEWS STAFF REPORT

SUMMIT COUNTY – The Sheriff’s Office recently participated in Operation Shepherd, an annual sweep which targets fugitive sex offenders that have failed to comply with state and federal registration laws.

The local operation is also part of Colorado’s “Most Wanted” Top 100 Sex Offenders, the largest sex offender fugitive and compliance operation in Colorado. The Sheriff’s Office participated in the sweep in partnership with the Summit County Probation Department.

Compliance checks were conducted on registered sex offenders and sex offenders who are on probation in Summit County. They resulted in 14 successful compliance checks, one warrant issued, and one ongoing investigation.

Operation Shepherd officially started June 1, with law enforcement agencies simultaneously conducting unannounced compliance checks throughout the state. The annual sweep, initiated in 2008 by the U.S. Marshals Service’s Adam Walsh Task Force, resulted in 180 arrests and 3,978 compliance checks conducted throughout the State of Colorado.

As of March 9, Colorado had 10,974 actively registered sex offenders and 732 outstanding state warrants for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender, according to information from the CBI criminal information system.

A list of registered sex offenders in Summit County may be found on the Summit County Sheriff’s website at http://www.co.summit.co.us/sheriff/.
