The Summit County Sheriff’s Office says it is continuing to investigate after masked intruders broke into a Keystone apartment and attacked the resident.

Summit County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mike Schilling said in an email Tuesday, Feb. 25, that the Sheriff’s Office believes “this is an isolated incident and not part of a larger pattern or organized activity.”

The incident occurred Feb. 10 at the Wintergreen complex in Keystone, Schilling said. A group of four masked individuals knocked on the apartment door and attacked the resident when he answered, he said.

The apartment’s resident was able to escape the attackers, who then entered the unit and caused property damage, Schilling said. No similar incidents have been reported in Summit County since then, he said.

“There is no elevated risk to public safety related to this case,” Schilling said.

He added that residents can take simple steps like locking doors, being aware of their surroundings or using a window, peephole or camera system to check who is at the door, especially late at night, to remain safe in their homes.

Anyone with information about the case should contact non-emergency dispatch at 970-668-8600 and reference case No. 25-2656.
