Summit County teen cuts hair out of love

Summit daily news
Special to the Daily Serenity Mitchell before her cut. Below, after.

For two years, 13-year-old Serenity Mitchell has been growing her blonde hair, in order to donate it to Locks of Love. And for those same two years, her mother, Lori Mitchell, has hoped her daughter’s desire would simply fade away.

“I loved the idea that she’s helping another child, but the idea that my child was going to cut her hair … I didn’t want her to cut it … she has thick hair and I didn’t think it would look good (short),” said Lori Mitchell. “I didn’t discourage her; I just tried the ignoring approach, but she kept bringing it up.”

Serenity latched onto the idea of giving her hair to Locks of Love after talking to her 26-year-old sister, Krystal, about how it’d be fun to chop it off for a good cause.

Locks of Love is a nonprofit that provides hairpieces to financially needy children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. The idea hit home for Serenity because one of her friend’s sisters is fighting cancer.

So, last week, The Chopping Block in Breckenridge cut off her long ponytail.

Serenity, who’s had long hair all her life, said she misses her length “a little, because everything’s different,” including the fact that her head feels “really light.”

She plans on growing it out again, so she can give another donation, and this time, her mom’s not too worried.

“She actually looks cute with her new hair-do,” Lori Mitchell said. “I just think it’s very brave of her to do. It’s a lovely gesture … and to be affected personally like that instead of just donating money …”
