Summit County is special for many reasons, but it’s geography has put it on the map.
Called “Colorado’s Playground,” the county is best known for its world-class ski resorts and epic mountain scenery. Breckenridge Ski Resort, Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, Keystone Resort and Copper Mountain Resort offer virtually unlimited options for snow sports enthusiasts.
Summit County is much more than a ski destination. Most of its towns were founded before the ski industry took hold in Colorado.
Before skiing, the county was home mostly to miners and assorted mountain-loving folk. Across the 600 square miles comprising the county, old mines and mining structures in various levels of decay dot the landscape. In the dense forests blanketing the base of the towering peaks, one can find high-alpine versions of typical residential neighborhoods.
Most of the land in the county is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, providing thousands of acres of year-round recreation. The Blue River, Snake River and Ten Mile Creek all feed Summit County’s two large reservoirs, Dillon Reservoir and Green Mountain Reservoir. Enjoy sailing, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and motorized water sports in these Summit County waters. Also, five challenging golf courses are open to the public, and hundreds of miles of trails provide visitors and locals infinite options for hiking, biking, camping and exploring.
The three County Commissioners oversee the county’s various services and work to keep Summit County a great place to visit and live. County government emphasizes issues like the environment, education, growth and development, water rights, transportation and tourism in its effort to help the area evolve while preserving what makes it so special.
This is a community always looking for progressive and forward-thinking ways to solve problems and better serve its citizens.
