Summit County’s free wood chipping program to start June 2

Colorado State University Extension officials say increased participation in the county’s wood-chipping program shows that people are changing their behaviors for the better. Once chipped, the woody biomass is gathered in large mounds throughout the summer at one of three sites before being trucked up to the Climax Mine west of Copper Mountain.

Starting June 2, Summit County’s chipping program will run for eight weeks. The program provides free chipping and disposal of woody vegetation around residents’ homes as a wildfire mitigation measure.

Neighborhoods have designated weeks for chipping, and residents must stack piles of material by 8 a.m. on the Monday of their neighborhood’s week. Materials can include trees, logs and branches up to 12 inches in diameter, and piles cannot contain willows or nails, wire or other construction materials.

Workers will record all pile locations each Monday, then collect piles throughout the week.
