Summit Daily News fumbles with focus on quarterback Van Ness

I am writing in regard to Jason Starr’s article Saturday, Sept. 14, on the Summit High School football team’s loss to Evergreen.

I seriously question Starr’s choice of which player to interview, quote and highlight in his article – namely Joey Van Ness. Van Ness is the quarterback for Evergreen High School.

For the last six years, Van Ness was a quarterback for Summit schools. Joey chose to turn his back on Summit and his former teammates this year and move to Evergreen to play for a rival school. Van Ness is no longer a member of this community.

Why did Starr choose to focus on Van Ness? Mr. Starr is a sports reporter for the Summit Daily News.

The Summit Daily News is a local newspaper that is read and supported by local readers and advertisers. I believe most of the readers want to read about the more than 30 boys who practice and play for Summit, win or lose.

Mr. Starr’s total disregard for our local kids and his article added insult to injury to our local football players who went out last Friday, played a good game and still lost.

If he cannot support our kids in Summit County, then maybe he should consider moving to another community where he can support the locals. In my book, he is no star.
