Summit Daily to sell building and lot

JIM MORGAN
summit daily publisher

The building that is home to the Summit Daily is for sale.

There is nothing to read between lines in our decision to list the building for sale, as it is pretty straight forward.

The newspaper building was originally constructed to house not just offices for our editorial and sales departments, but also production and press departments. During the past several years, press and production have moved to our consolidated printing plant in Gypsum. And it’s no secret that, as our local economy has contracted during the past nine months, we made difficult but necessary decisions to reduce staffing in the sales and editorial departments. We have a building designed for more than 50 employees, and today we have 23. As such, we have a much larger building than we need.

That’s what led us to put the property up for sale. We know that such decisions inevitably lead to rumors. Allow us to squelch those now: We’re not closing. We’re not reducing the days we publish. The newspaper is not for sale. We’re actually in solid shape financially. We’re simply seeking to sell a building (and the adjoining lot) that’s much bigger than we need, and if and when it sells we’ll relocate into a building that’s a better fit. And frankly, we do hope to make some money in the transaction.

Will the building sell? We don’t know, but we hope so, as it will be an indication of an improving economy – something we all want to see.
