FARMER’S KORNER ” Several students in Summit High School’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program received top honors around the state this month.

Senior Lea Taylor received the award of Colorado’s ProStart Student of the Year along with a $1,000 scholarship from the Colorado Restaurant Association Education Fund. Senior Kelsey Pierce received ProStart Student of the Year for Summit County as well as a $500 scholarship. Doug Pierce from the Arapahoe Cafe received the ProStart Mentor of the Year award. The honors were presented May 10 at the Colorado Restaurant Association awards luncheon in Denver. ProStart is the high school’s culinary arts program taught by Terri Vantiger.

In other news, senior Garrett Hedman received a first place award from the Colorado Conservation Trust for his video documentary on the topic of water use and conservation as well as a $1,000 prize. In addition, the Colorado Conservation Trust awarded Summit High School’s video production program with an $800 gift certificate to Circuit City for equipment.

These awards come on the heels of construction to build a new 9,400 square-foot wing at the high school to house expanding CTE offerings, including a new medical prep program, an expanded culinary arts program and video production program, a production studio and a community/commons area. Existing space will be remodeled for the construction tech program, computer and business technologies and the theater tech program. The addition is expected to be completed by summer 2007. The wing may also house the potential future expansion of a construction technology facility as well as expanded business and technology classrooms.
