Summit High School qualifies students to national speech and debate tournament

The Summit High School speech and debate team competed at the Western Slope National Qualifiers tournament on Saturday, March 8.

The team swept in the debate category, taking first and second in both the Lincoln Douglas debate and the Big Questions debate. Additionally, the team took first in the U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking category and won two spots on the National World Schools debate team.

The two national qualifiers join five other Tigers who previously qualified for the national competition. The seven athletes qualified for nationals include: senior Schuyler ClarkArens for Senate, freshman Jazzper Madans for House, junior Heidi Wuppermann for Lincoln Douglas debate, junior Tommy Bellavance for Big Questions debate, junior Josie Burnette for U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking, sophomore Sawyer Bovaird for the World Schools debate team and freshman El Hook Pribyl for the World Schools debate team.



Head coach Jenny Arens was awarded the 2025 Coach of the Year award for the Western Slope and the team won the 2025 Sweepstakes Award for the Best Debate team on the Western Slope.

The national tournament is slated for June in Des Moines, Iowa.
