The Summit Historical Society will hold a presentation Wednesday, Nov. 13, on a little-known Civil War battle that Colorado played a key role in.
The special presentation entitled, “How Colorado Saved the West,” will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Dillon Schoolhouse, according to a news release from the historical society. Led by Bob Pietrzyk, the presentation will delve into the Battle of Glorieta Pass, where Coloradans played a key role in thwarting Confederate ambitions during the Civil War.

Early in the war, the Confederacy sought to secure Colorado’s rich resources, including gold, beef and grain, to fuel their campaign, according to the news release. The call to arms went out, and Colorado’s brave volunteers arose to the occasion, protecting the West from Confederate control.
The event is free for veterans and is an excellent opportunity for military history enthusiasts, historians and the general public to explore a pivotal chapter in Colorado’s history, according to the historical society.
The event costs $15 for Summit Historical Society members and $20 for non-members.
