The Summit Historical Society will host its annual Women of Distinction luncheon on Saturday, March 8, at noon at the Dillon Community Church in Dillon, according to a news release.

The society hosts the event each March, which is Women’s History Month, as a tribute to Summit County women. The afternoon luncheon will celebrate women who have made a significant impact on education in Summit County.

This year, Lulu Buffington, who lived from 1875 to 1964, will be honored as the ‘Then’ recipient, while Dr. Bonnie Ward will be honored as the ‘Now’ recipient of the distinction, the news release states.

Buffington was a teacher in Breckenridge, where the Summit County Journal states that she was “very popular,” according to the Summit Historical Society. She was elected as the first female superintendent of Summit County schools in 1899 and reelected to that position in 1901.

Ward retired to Summit County in 2009 after a 40-year career in education in Maryland, the news release states. She serves in several roles in Summit County’s education system, including as the vice chair of the Education Foundation of Summit, according to the Summit Historical Society.

In addition to celebrating the Women of Distinction, the luncheon will have a drawing of items donated by Summit County businesses that will support the Summit Historical Society, the release states. Event proceeds will go to Summit Historical Society education and preservation endeavors. There will also be a special auction with benefits going to the Education Foundation of Summit. Lunch will be provided by Black Diamond Catering.

Tickets are available for $45 each or $340 for a table of eight people through March 1 or until sold out. Tickets are available at TinyURL.com/SummitWomenDistinction. Anyone with questions should contact Mail@SummitHistorical.org or call 970-468-2207.
