Summit Huts to thank its volunteers

Daily News staff report

BRECKENRIDGE – Summit Huts Association (SHA) will host an end-of-season party for its volunteers at the Griffith Lodge in Breckenridge at 6 p.m. May 20.

The nonprofit, which this year had about 40 volunteers, depends on its volunteers for restocking wood, cleaning, repairing and general maintenance at the county’s four backcountry huts.

“Our volunteers do everything except empty toilets,” said Mike Zobbe, SHA operations manager.

Volunteers also help host fundraising events such as the Backcountry Ball and run educational programs such as wildflower workshops and avalanche awareness programs. Many services and volunteer time are provided by SHA’s 15-member board.

From a financial perspective, the small organization can’t afford to staff all the management needs, so Zobbe said volunteers are vital to the organization. A hut stay currently costs about $28 per person per night, and Zobbe said the price would be substantially higher for the public to use the huts without volunteer support.

Anyone who has volunteered in the past 12 months for SHA is invited to attend the party. To make a reservation or get directions to Griffith Lodge, call (970) 453-8583 or e-mail to
