Summit Middle PTSA holding virtual fundraiser rather than selling items

Daily News staff report

PTSA members at Summit Middle School ask parents to make a monetary donation to the school rather than asking them to sell fundraising products where only a fraction of an item sold helps the school.PTSA members said the best part of this type of “virtual fundraiser” is that the school gets to keep 100 percent of the donation, and it’s tax deductible. The organization said if every family contributes $50, it can reach its fundraising goal for the year. Members ask that donations be made by Friday. The school has displayed a fundraising thermometer near the front office so students and parents can monitor donations as they accumulate. The donations will help pay for projects including the new Project Initiative Ropes Course, the Golden Fleece Program, classroom support, staff development and field trips. The Golden Fleece program was started at the beginning of the school year as a way for students to see more adult faces during passing time. Every day, volunteers wear a golden fleece vest and are present in the hallways while students head to their next class. Principal Iva Katz-Hesse said the program has really made an impact on school climate.”I have had several parents come up to me and tell me how great this program is. We are grateful to all our volunteers – parents and community members – who have stepped up to take on this role,” she said.
