Dillon-based Summit Pack and Ship started after its owner ‘saw a need’ in the community

It wasn’t long after his move from Alma to Silverthorne that Matt McDonough lost his new post office box at the Dillon UPS Store last April.
He found himself in the same scramble many other Summit County residents did looking for a new means to receive and send their mail. Looking around at other spots that had similar offerings to UPS, he saw they were overwhelmed with demand after the store’s closing.
So, he decided to do something about it.
He called the former district manager of the UPS Store to get the contact of employees he frequently interacted with and got moving on plans to open his own packing and shipping store in the same spot.
Angela Michalak, a former manager for the Dillon UPS store, said she was given a few days’ notice she would be out of work because of the store’s closing, so she was available to help McDonough launch his new venture. Her former coworker Alex Romo also jumped on the ship.
McDonough and his team opened Summit Pack and Ship on Aug. 26. He has an entrepreneurial spirit — this is not his first business venture, but it is the first one to involve mail.
“I don’t have experience in this business, but I saw a need,” he said.
He is also an electric contractor, owns Ten Mile Electric and is a volunteer with Breckenridge Ski Resort’s ski patrol. He also previously owned a rafting guide business for years.
McDonough said because his newest business is independently owned and doesn’t have ties to a larger franchise, it allows it to have a variety of carriers like UPS, DHL, FedEx and International Package Shipping.
Aside from packing, printing and other services typically found in shipping stores, Summit Pack and Ship also offers fingerprinting and background checks. McDonough said this service has been pulling people in from places like Steamboat and Salida because there are so few places in the High Country that offer them. Employees are certified through the background check provider, Identogo. Additionally, Summit Pack and Ship has on-site notary public and shredding services. The spot also has the ability to ship and receive items with perishable food. Also, skis and snowboards can be shipped and delivered through the business, as can artwork.
McDonough said with Romo being a Spanish speaker, the spot can provide many of its services in both English and Spanish.
The mailboxes at Summit Pack and Ship are available 24 hours a day and are secured by a code at the door.
Summit Pack and Ship is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is located at 265 Dillon Ridge Road in Dillon. More information can be found at SummitPackShip.com.
