The Summit School District Board of Education relocated its 5:30 p.m. meeting today from Breckenridge Elementary School to the Central Administration Office in anticipation of a large crowd.

Superintendent Heidi Pace plans to present recommendations for the district’s equal access initiative, a statement much anticipated by many parents who attended the August 29 forum on the subject.

Her recommendation is to create a task force to generate suggestions and input from a broad demographic base and varied viewpoints for how to best meet the goal of ensuring equity and access for all students. The Board of Education’s charge is to assure a high-quality education throughout the district, regardless of differences.

The late August forum was well-attended with roughly 200 parents and school staff and administrators. Many said the idea – to offer advanced learning opportunities to all students and give every student the chance for high achievement – hasn’t been communicated well, and many were unclear about where it originated, how it’s being implemented and how it’s working.

Prior to the meeting, at the board’s work session, Jim Eck from McREL consulting will review the final report on Closing the Achievement Gap. The presentation should include findings from test data and recommendations for moving forward, Borger said.
