A notification displayed on Summit School District’s website on Thursday, Jan. 16, is warning of a data breach involving a third-party vendor for its student information system.

The district was notified on Jan. 7 that PowerSchool’s systems were compromised between Dec. 19-28, potentially exposing login credentials that gain access to sensitive student and staff data, according to the district’s alert. The breach may have exposed names, social security numbers, addresses, medical details and contact information, the alert states.

School district officials stated that PowerSchool has confirmed that the situation has been contained and that the company is working on investigating further. Officials say the district is monitoring the situation and will provide updates.

PowerSchool may offer direct communication to affected families, including credit monitoring services, if applicable, according to Summit School District’s alert.
