SUMMIT COUNTY – Although storms have dusted the peaks in recent weeks, Sunday’s system gave Summit County its first measurable snowfall of the season.

According to Rick Bly, who has provided snowfall and weather statistics to the National Weather Service from his Breckenridge home for 27 years, there was 1 inch of snow in Breckenridge Sunday morning. The Colorado Department of Transportation reported 2 inches of wet snow at the Eisenhower Tunnel.”It’s a little early,” Bly said of the season’s first snowfall. “Usually it comes the last two weeks of September. But it’s not unheard of.”

There was no snow last year in September; the first snowfall came Nov. 3, according to Bly’s records. In 2002 it was Sept. 22 (1 inch), and in 2001 it was Sept. 18 (6 inches). Sunday’s storm also delivered a hefty dose of rain, Bly said. The state’s far northern mountains got between 2-5 inches of snow. Parts of Trail Ridge Road, the nation’s highest continuous paved highway, in Rocky Mountain National Park were closed Sunday because of snow and wind.

Forecasts predict a wetter than normal rest of the month with fall-like conditions in Colorado, followed by a drier October and November.- Material from The Associated Press was used in this report
