Summit High School senior Ashley Harding Magee has never competed in a pageant or beauty contest. Nonetheless, she’s decided to go for it all: This October, Harding Magee, 17, will vie for the title of Miss Colorado Teen USA.

“I have never done anything like that before, and at first it really scared me to do it, but after thinking about all the opportunities, it sounds really fun,” Harding Magee said, adding she’ll make new friends and gain more confidence by competing.

She decided to enter the pageant after receiving information about it in the mail. She applied, sent in a picture and biography and was chosen as a contestant.

Harding Magee’s mother Jeanne Harding is nervous, excited and proud.

“She’s really a beautiful person inside and out,” Harding said. “I think she could be Miss Colorado.”

The pageant takes place Oct. 30 in Greeley and includes a personality interview and swimsuit and evening gown competitions.

“I just hope I make an impression on the judges and everybody there. I’m hoping to have a really great experience – it’s not even about the winning, it’s about having a new experience,” Harding Magee said.

Of course, there’s always the chance of winning Miss Teen Colorado and spending 2012 working with charitable organizations around Colorado, raising awareness and talking to children. And if she won, Harding Magee would compete for Miss Teen USA.

But if doesn’t win the main crown, there’s still a bunch of other titles available – like Miss Congeniality, Miss Style or Miss Outstanding Teen. Pageant organizers will also award some 30 scholarships to contestants, Harding said, which is a big draw for the family. Harding Magee plans to attend nursing school after graduating next spring.

“I just think everything’s positive about it and she wanted to do it so we went for it,” Jeanne Harding said.

The fee for entrance is $899, plus extra expenses like an evening gown, shoes and interview outfit. The family is looking for sponsorships, which are tax-deductible, by around Sept. 25 since fees are due Sept. 29. Sponsors will be listed in the program book, website and pageant video.
