Summit Snowflake Championship starts Wednesday

Daily News staff report

BRECKENRIDGE – The Summit County Arts Council sponsors the third annual 2004 Summit Snowflake Championship in collaboration with the International Snow Sculpture Championships next week.

The championship will feature 20 teams from Summit County schools. The teams will model after the international teams, and the international team members will mentor some school participants to explain their art, as well as the customs of their countries Monday.

The sculpting will begin from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and will continue on the school district’s day off from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30. The judging will take place the same day, after 5 p.m.

Schools have a five-member team with one captain. All teams will receive a goody bag and a red, white and blue Snowflake Medallion.

The award ceremony will take place on Saturday, Jan. 31, along with the International Award Ceremony at the Riverwalk Center Amphitheater. The Summit Snowflake trophies will be given out to the winning teams.

Awards include the International Award, voted by the visiting international teams; Best of Show; Best Theme; Most Creative; Most Ambitious; People’s Choice; and Kids’ Choice. Ballots for the People’s Choice and Kids’ Choice will be available at the Summit County Arts Council booth near the Riverwalk sculpting site.

Volunteers are needed to assist with the championship. For more information, call Summit Snowflake Championship event chair Jan McKim at (970) 453-0450.
