Summit Stage likely on a long downturn

Bill Dautel, Frisco

Slowing economy, poor snowfall and/or other means of transportation?

Yes, snowfall and transportation is a very small part. But, Bill Watterson needs to do his business and economic history studies. This great country of ours just completed, in every aspect, this greatest era of prosperity ever. The average time frame is about 20 years of economic growth followed by 20 years of economic decline (bust). These economic cycles have occurred here and around the world for well over 200 years. Currently, we’re only about 15 to 18 percent into this decline.

Sorry, Mr. Watterson, but the decline of ridership has only just begun. You can advertise all you want. But to whom?

Example: Late-night service was meant for riders. The Stage carries very few, if any, people to and from the night businesses. As I see it, being a transit driver, this would have worked during the 1990s good economic times. It doesn’t work when there are very few people, like now. No matter what you do, Mr. Watterson, Summit Stage ridership will continue to decline over the coming years – snow or no snow. We are in a major national economic decline for the next 15 to 20 years.

Now is the time, Mr. Watterson, to start doing more for all the Summit Stage employees, like higher, respectful wages and work benefits. The drivers, dispatchers and support people are the ones who ultimately make the Summit Stage a great service, which, of course, it is. Your statement, “We want to do what we can to be as meaningful to this county as possible,” should be referring to all Summit Stage employees first.
