Summit students will get two new days off

FRISCO – The Summit School District has great news for parents looking for three-day weekend vacation opportunities.

Four half days in the upcoming Summit School District calendar will become two full student days off set for Oct. 6 and Jan. 12, 2004, the school board decided Wednesday.

The two new days off are Mondays.

The former half days, as well as the two full days, comprise time set aside for district-sponsored professional staff development.

The half days erased from the calendar had been planned for Oct. 7, Jan. 13, 2004, Feb. 17, 2004, and April 27, 2004.

The school board changed the calendar based on feedback from parents compiled from the district’s annual parent survey and other community input.

“The board felt that the half days of teacher professional development were not successful for parents or teachers,” said new superintendent of schools Lynn Spampinato.

“This calendar change is a better use of time and will hopefully be less of a burden on families,” she said. “Student learning will be enhanced with a quality, rigorous staff development program.”

The four half days were instituted three years ago after voters approved the November 2001 mill levy which increased funding for education.

As it turned out, the half days were difficult for instruction and forced parents to scramble for child care four extra times for only half a day. In some instances, the half days increased absenteeism over the years.

Board members said they take full responsibility for making these changes.
