Summit third-graders top state average in reading
SUMMIT COUNTY – Summit School’s third-graders outperformed their peers around the state in this year’s CSAP reading tests.
Eighty-two percent of the 171 students who took the Colorado Student Assessment Program tests scored “at or above proficient.” Across the state, 72 percent of third-graders scored at that level. The report was great news for teachers and administrators.
“The district is especially pleased to find that the percentage of students who scored unsatisfactory decreased from 7 percent to 3 percent from last year’s results,” said Assistant Superintendent Millie Hamner. “And the percentage of students who scored advanced increased from 9 percent to 15 percent.”
Students in third through 10th grade took CSAP tests in reading, writing, mathematics and science in March. The state released the reading test scores this week to help teachers make individualized plans for students before school is out. The rest of the scores are to be released in July.
Silverthorne Elementary School principal Steve Riggins said he is very encouraged after his third-graders turned in the highest reading scores ever. Eighty-four percent of the Silverthorne students scored at or above proficient; previous groups had topped out at 69 percent. Riggins attributed the success to his staff and some scheduling changes. The principal hired extra specialists to reduce the teacher-to-student ratio, instituted no-disturbance policies to “let teachers teach,” and gave teachers the time to work toward the schoolwide goal of proficiency.
“We didn’t put anything in the milk,” Riggins said, joking. “It’s just empowering teachers to do a great job.”
Nine students also took a Spanish-language version of the test, but their scores were not released to the public. State law prohibits the release of scores in student groups smaller than 16 to protect the identity of those students.
Parents will receive individual test results for their children in the next two weeks. Hamner and school district data specialist Ardyce Putnam will present the scores and further analysis to the Summit School Board at its May 8 meeting.
