Summit Up 1-25-11: It ain’t fer eatin’, it’s just fer lookin’ through

Good morning and welcome to Summit Up, the world’s only daily column that’s feeling a little bit like that dude Ten Bears in the film “The Outlaw Josie Wales.” Ten Bears (Will Sampson) tells Josey (Clint Eastwood) about how the pale face is always making his people move farther and farther into a smaller and smaller patch of land. He concludes: “Ten Bears will move no more.”

Yep, we keep gettin’ shoved into a smaller and smaller news hole, which means that vii) ya’ll need to buy more ads to make bigger papers and 73A) we need to try to be funnier faster – something along the lines of the “Take my wife … please” brand of humor. Trouble is, we always need room to stretch out a little, so we’re not sure we can fire off that kind of quick wit. And we would have had more room but these folks up top really really wanted their photo in the paper so, nice guys that we are, we complied.

Anyway, in the course of checking IMDB.com for the name of the actor who played Ten Bears, we checked on the bio of our favorite character from that film, Lone Watie, played by Chief Dan George. In the course of his career, he also played characters with names like Old Man Hawk, Sam Birdwater, Chief Peter A-Tas-Ka-Nay and Sounding Sky. Can you say “typecast?” Even so, we loved the old guy – and too bad he passed away in 1981!

So it’s Tuesday, so that’s something, right? Next thing you know it’ll be Wednesday, just one day before Thursday which is right before Friday and WEEKEND! See how you can spin things to make them seem a little better?

We out.
