Good morning and welcome to Summit Up, the world’s only daily column that has a quick note from another deputy of the Spelling & Grammar Police. Bonnie Bilant writes thusly:Earlier this week you had your say about grammatical mistakes that some people make and asked us Summit Up readers to send in ours. Well, my pet peeve is illustrated in the following sentence. “The holidays are a terrible time to try and lose weight.” Today I read an article on a television channel website that contained almost that same sentence. I have noticed people making this type of mistake in daily conversations and yes, even in a few articles in the Summit Daily News. The correct sentence should be, “The holidays are a terrible time to try to lose weight.” I cannot quote the exact rule or rules of grammar that make the first sentence incorrect and the second sentence correct but I think it has something to do with objects of sentences. It is correct to say, “The holidays are a wonderful time to try egg nog and fruit cake.” This is because you can make a complete sentence out of each, egg nog and fruit cake, separately. “The holidays are a wonderful time to try egg nog” and “The holidays are a wonderful time to try fruit cake” make complete sentences by themselves so it is OK to combine them. There! I feel better having done my part to help Summit Up readers everywhere speak and write English correctly.
