Summit Up 12-17-12: Where we’re wondering if Ullr is a Broncos fan

Summit Up
Special to the Daily

Good morning and welcome to Summit Up, the world’s only daily column that’s watching football in the middle of a snowstorm. Yes, that’s right, even swirling flakes of snow can’t keep us from cheering on our Broncos – from inside, of course, nice and toasty next to our flatscreen TV. Honestly, we’d watch the Broncos anywhere (at a bar, in a car, near or far) but we’re quite happy to do it from the comfort of our home and office, sipping on egg nog or hot chocolate stirred with candy canes, chomping down on cheerily decorated sugar cookies. We’re also pretty psyched to see the snow continue, although we do now wish we had finished our holiday shopping earlier.

We’re wondering if Ullr is a Broncos fan. Though the ancient Vikings didn’t play football, they certainly had some rough sports, including various contests of wrestling and feats of strength. One particular version of tug-of-war involved teams pulling on an animal hide over a pit of fiery coals. We’d hate to see what their version of dodgeball would have been like!

American football involves considerably less fire, but no less skill and strength. It branched off from soccer and rugby and grew increasingly popular in the States. In 1920, the American Professional Football Association held the first professional game in Ohio, in which the hosting Triangles defeated the Columbus Panhandles.

So today we lift our beverages in a toast to the progenitors of one of America’s greatest sports, and also to the teams of modern day who have chosen much better team names. Cheers and we out.
