Summit Up

Good morning and welcome to Summit Up, the world’s only daily column confused about this whole genetically modified food issue.

As we sit here munching on grapes (about as healthy as we get for a snack around here), it occurs to us: Aren’t seedless grapes genetically modified? For that matter, what about tangelos and all those other crossed citrus fruits?

In fact, shouldn’t we be blaming all of this on Gregor Mendel, and not corn or Europe’s uneasiness about saturating their commodity markets? Whoa, we’re talking scientific economics here. Somebody slow us down.

Better start your fasting and praying today: On March 20, Congress passed resolution No. 153, which recognizes “the public need for fasting and prayer in order to secure the blessings and protection of Providence for the people of the United States and our Armed Forces during the conflict in Iraq and under the threat of terrorism at home.” For those of you already off your armchairs shouting about the separation of church and state, we should point out that Congress did the same thing during the American Revolution and the Civil War.

While we leave it to you to decide whether or not such measures might help and show solidarity for our service members, we can’t help but observe that, at the least, it can help you sympathize with those hungry and god-beseeching folks we’re “liberating.”

Friday’s like a fifth wheel on a three-legged camel sometimes, you know? Today’s password is “dromedary unicycle.” Use it at, fax at (970) 668-0755 or just record your stomach gurglings on the voicemail at (970) 668-3998, ext 237.

We’re out engineering seedless sunflowers …
