Summit Up

Good morning and welcome to Summit Up, the world’s only daily column further convinced we haven’t evolved very far past bone-wielding monkeys and cavemen.

What exactly possesses people to loot a museum? Yes, we’re still watching this war coverage on cable. And it was pretty disappointing to see people in Iraq looting a museum of history.

Granted, we’ll probably never know what it’s like to have our country invaded, to not know where to get a drink of clean water or live in destitute fear. We try to make some allowances for understanding behavior in that sort of context, not to mention the cultural differences.

But even if Summit Up Land were to be invaded, even if we were all hiding in the hills, poaching game to stay alive and drinking from muddy puddles, we wouldn’t be thinking, “Hey, betcha if we run on down to Denver, we can steal a mummy or an old book.”

If war wasn’t enough proof of the base state of human consciousness, its effects are.

It’s Friday, thank Gandhi. We want to hear your best memories from this better-than-lately ski season at, fax at (970) 668-0755 or just shout “Thank heaven for snow!” on the voicemail at (970) 668-3998, ext. 237.

We’re out daydreaming about the desert, big moons and hot wind …
