Summit Up

Good morning and welcome to Summit Up, the world’s only daily column re-running Joy Baldwin’s photos.

We ran these yesterday. But, we got the story partly wrong, so as we said, we’re re-running them.

First, let us explain the errata: These photos were only taken one month apart. The first and dustier one was taken May 26. The one with that beautiful blue stuff was taken June 26. A month makes a heck of a difference, huh?

The other reason we’re reprinting them is to point out that, even though the reservoir is pretty close to full now, isn’t it still torture? We know we felt weird, bad, scared and all sorts of other primordial emotions last year when the reservoir wasn’t much more than a dust bowl. We worried about fire like everybody else, but there was also this unsettling feeling – this unnatural feeling like we had eaten bad seafood but the real trouble hadn’t quite taken hold of our stomachs yet – as if we were somehow supposed to be living near water.

Anyway, now it’s there and we’re still troubled. With this hot weather lately, we can’t help but feel drawn to the water’s edge, where we stand eyeing the waves longingly, looking up and down the shore thinking, “We could probably run out there, swim around real quick and nobody would catch us.” It’s got to be the biggest tease in the world living next to a lake like that and not being able to cool off in it.

Ah, well, what do you do? You go home and play with your ducky in the bathtub, if you’re us.

We’re out doing the breast stroke in the shower …
