Summit Up 4-30-10: Brought to you by Dirty Ullr

Special to the Daily/CMC-Jim LambMary Sokolowski lights her candle during Sunday's induction ceremony for members into the Colorado Mountain College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa - the honors society for two-year college students. Good morning and welcome to Summit Up, the world’s only daily column that has to say the only thing worse than a snowstorm when you want sun and warmth is a dirty snowstorm. As we’re brushing and scraping 8 inches off our car Thursday morning, we couldn’t help but notice that, in addition to the unwelcome white stuff, there was a deposit of even more unwelcome brown stuff. It looked like somebody danced by our car during the storm and scattered potting soil hither and yon. What the heck?(Insert boilerplate caveat here that we know and appreciate that both A-Basin and Loveland are still open and we’re happy they got some fresh stuff; also, that we know and appreciate this additional moisture is good for the snowpack, the reservoirs, the fish, rafting, etc. etc.)But this brown stuff has got to go. We guess instead of a Dirty Sanchez you’d call this kind of event a Dirty Ullr, eh? We just never knew there would come a day when, in addition to a snow brush/scraper we needed a garden trowel to manage our car’s exterior in the morning. Sheesh. But hey, maybe we could plant some pot seeds in our car snow, grow some weed and be a mobile marijuana dispensary, raking in the bucks and …(sound of police siren)OK, scratch that idea. Apparently you have to fill out some forms to do this kind of thing, and if there’s one thing we hate, it’s paperwork.***Here’s a Matriculation Alert! going out to Jordan Cooper, who graduated from Summit High in 2006 and now, right on time, is graduating from Western State College. Proud parents Candace and Mark Barnes write thusly:”Not only Cum Laude but additional recognition cords in History, English, Academic Leadership, Student Government and the Honors program. Join them and li’l sista’s Quinn and Alex Cooper in the “Smarty-Pants Dance” Hooray Jordan, we are so very proud of you!”Nice! We expect to be hearing a lot of this kind of thing at this time of year. Feel free to send any Smarty Pants Alerts, Matriculation Alerts, graduation or promo photos or whatever to***Speaking of graduations and such, congrats to all the Colorado Mountain College students scoring degrees today. This is the first class to pop out of the fancy new facility, which is a very cool thing. Speaking of, though: We were at CMC the other day, which is this super-new, kinda high-tech place with fancy electronics and everything … but there was a giant rock holding the front door open.We actually kind of liked that, sort of a nod to a simpler time. And no matter how fancy your door and security system is, you just can’t beat a good ol’ rock for a door prop.
