Summit Weed coordinator moves on

SUMMIT COUNTY – In four years as the county’s weed coordinator, Paul Schreiner has killed a lot of false chamomile, Canada thistle and leafy spurge.

He’s acquired equipment – mowers, sprayers and trucks among them – to assist him in his battle against noxious weeds.

And most importantly, in his mind, he’s created a public awareness of the problem that threatens millions of acres in the West.

Now, he’s off to thornier pastures.

Beginning today, Schreiner will open Eco-Rx, a vegetation, noxious weed control and reclamation consultation business based in Fairplay.

“I’m kind of a troubleshooter,” he said. “I like to take on the problems that seem impossible, break them down and get them done. At this point, they’re certainly not done (in Summit County), but the mechanisms are in place to continue the program and have it continue strong.”

With Summit County’s weed program operating smoothly, Schreiner wants to tackle bigger programs, statewide. They include areas that have been hit by forest fires, mine reclamation sites and ranches that have been pulled from the agricultural pool but aren’t monitored for weed populations.

Schreiner earned his degree in botany and chemistry from Western State College before working in the Gunnison and Eagle county weed programs. Four years ago, he came to Breckenridge.

He will be replaced by Lisa Taylor, who can be reached at (970) 668-4218. Schreiner can be reached at Eco-Rx at (719) 839-5488.
